Faces will be melted by a blistering set of new Archer Music.

Black Label Society gave them the chance.

Archer is a young Hard Rock / Metal hailing from Santa Cruz, California U.S.A. Although they are unsigned, Black Label Society gave them the chance to go support them on their Bezerkus Tour 2011. This tour also had a show in Lucerne City, Swiss Canton of Lucerne, Switzerland.

Unfortunately, the truck with the Black Label Society equipment broke down on the way to Switzerland and they had to cancel their show. But that was the moment for Archer. They played more than one hour for free and gained popularity and a lot of new fans.

After their great show, I bought their current record “Who’s Gonna Save You Now?” for ten Swiss Francs. That’s a cheap price and a bargain in my country. That’s the story how I met Singer & Guitar player Dylan Rosenberg, Bass Player and Singer DavidDeSilva and Percussionist Ferret. I also appreciated their down to earth attitude and the fans had great small talk with every band member.

What can you expect? It is straight kick ass mixture between Metal & Hard Rock! Sometimes Dylan Rosenberg vocals remind me a little bit of Dave Mustaine and the guitar tunes from him and David sound like Black Label Society.

There’s no bad song on “Who’s Gonna Save You Now?” That’s a killer record for an Underground band. For example “Retribution” and “Brewtality” cause a lot of head banging moments and offer a great range of musical skills on a high level. It’s a great effort for these three musicians, who play music at a young age (the age is between 21 till’ 27 years).

Even the production is different than most stuff today. Gilby Clarke was responsible for it. It is fits right to the Metal and Hard Rock from back in the days. You might feel the old school vibes when you listen to this record! Maor Applebaum did the mastering in California.

I really hope that Archer get a record deal. Furthermore, I would be very happy if this or a further record could put them in the limelight. Such acts deserve a breakthrough.

HAILSWEBZINE REVIEW: ARCHER’S ‘WHO’S GONNA SAVE YOU NOW?’

AREA OF ORIGIN: Santa Cruz. A coastal city located in the northern end of California with a largely young population (the median age derived from a 2010 census states that the median age of SC residents is 29), Santa Cruz is a known haven for surfers, hippies and their descendants, artists and musicians. It’s littered with oddball cafes and gourmet coffee houses, vegan-friendly eateries, natural grocery stores, medical marijuana dispensaries, an oceanfront Boardwalk (complete with rides and a decent-sized stage where I once saw the last two songs of an Eddie Money set), a handful of museums, surf and skate shops, and the UCSC Arboretum.

REVIEW SUBJECT: Who’s Gonna Save You Now?; the full-length, self-released sophomore disc from this young Hard Rock/Heavy Metal trio. Produced and mixed by Gilby Clarke (GUNS ‘N’ ROSES, VAINS OF JENNA, L.A. GUNS) and finally mastered by Maor Appelbaum (CYNIC, THERION) at Redrum Recording in Los Angeles.

REVIEW:

The young trio known as ARCHER are quickly amassing fans the globe over, having recently completed a second circuit as an opener for BLACK LABEL SOCIETY in Europe on their Bezerkus tour this summer.

In speaking to the guys in my interview with them from back in May (see it at THIS link), they each have a very different background of musical influences and tastes. Ferret probably has the most eccentric/varied/underground tastes, Dave fancies Stoner Rock and more extreme veins of Metal, and Dylan’s heart beats to the classics of yore (Stevie Ray Vaughn, VAN HALEN, DIO, HEAVEN AND HELL) – and he audibly worships at the altar of BLS mainman Zakk Wylde as well.

Dylan’s not as crazy about some of the more recent subgenres of Metal, so, not having yet heard the entire album (I had heard tracks like “Brewtality” years before when they were more raw and unpolished, in their demo stages and not yet a designated part of any album), I was definitely curious to see how everyone’s individual flairs/tastes would be represented and what each member would bring to the proverbial table.

I’ve been keeping on eye on ARCHER for a few years now, and I can say that mainman Dylan Rosenberg’s voice has drastically improved since the band’s inception. He’s developed a smoother snarl that becomes more distinct with time, whereas in previous demos it seemed to me he wasn’t really sure where his own voice and sound lay. He has indeed located himself at last, but what will really blow his detractors and fellows alike out of the water isn’t his cords at all – it’s his finger work, in fact.

Almost all songs feature a sweet ass guitar solo, so all of you whose toes curl over that sort of thing will need new pants after hearing this fine piece of musicianship. You’ll be like this guy:

Bassist Dave DeSilva and drummer Ferret also deliver the spoils – Dave mirroring Dylan’s pomp and energy instrumentally and vocally, and Ferret bringing that last boost of adrenaline needed for lift-off with his impeccable timing and raw battery.

“Hell in a Handbag” is the opening track, and probably the second best on the album with its chiding, hummable lyrics and melody. And it has pomp for days.

Without a doubt though, my favorite song on the album is its title (and second) track. It has this great galloping beat, just the right amount of guitar noodling, strong vocals and chorus, and the best union of all three members’ talents I’ve personally heard yet.

“Pride Before the Fall” is a slightly slower, darker track to disperse the energetic free-flow of its predecessors on the album, lending a nice little moodiness before “War Wagin’” rounds the album out with the same audacity it began with.

Who’s Gonna Save You Now? is an impressive feat, but having Gilby Clarke and Maor Appelbaum’s expertise at hand probably didn’t hurt much either.

ARCHER has just finished working on their forthcoming album entitled “Who’s Gonna Save You Now?”

The album was Produced, Engineered & Mixed by Gilby Clarke (Ex- Guns & Roses, Rockstar Supernova) at Redrum Studios and mastered by Maor Appelbaum (Halford, Yngwie Malmsteen, Cynic, Lita Ford, Seven The Hardway, Anacrusis, Armored Saint, Daath) at Maor Appelbaum Mastering in California – U.S.A.

The album will be released in late spring followed by extensive touring.
